 | This is a cover up placing blame for what has been actively done for decades on specific opposition groups to draw attention away from the fact that absolutely everyone with a stake in the direction of society is taking advantage of this data. Keep in mind who is making this people: Netflix, a corporation that does the exact same thing with data. Youtube does the same thing as well, it shows you videos it's algorithms have decided will maximize your engagement.  | Oh my. Way late to the party but i did follow this when it was happening. This story just validates all my suspicions on data syphoning so far. I was never on facebook. I dont use instagram, tik tok or any other social media shit. The only data google gets from me is severely limited as i hardly use their products. Gmail in the only one apart from youtune here - but YT data alone is massive as it gives so much away. Not only are we watching crap but we also write stuff like this and they hoover it all up and turn this into data points. I only use gmail to have an account so i cant watch YT and be able to make comments. I do not use it to send personal emails. Screw that. They get enough data from me here they are not getting private emails as well. I dont allow google's targetting methods, i dont allow them to store anything. I dont allow them to offer me "personalized content". I block all third party cookies. Top domain only. I block all ads. I block all social media icons from displaying - i dotn use them anyway and they are used to track you apart from profile what you like and dont like. I block all javascript as default. And they still track you via called scripts from the top domain or link necessary functionality of the website to scripts that track and profile you. My advice these days is that if a site is broken when javascript is blocked then to not bother allowing them access to this machine language to run on your machine as it has, most likely, nefrarious intent. If the site breaks you know it is bad so back out. Do all of the above and they still track you. In order to view yt you have to allow google to set cookies and allow them java privs. This priv is then transfered accross the web and any site you visit that has any connection with google, and %99 of the web does, will phone home that info. Google analytics. I think there are add ons now in some browsers that block this if you want. If you are using chrome which is googles own browser than you can be %100 ensured that you are being spied on yet so many dont care. Chrome is popular. I dont use it. I will never use it. Ive been a firefox user, which google contributes code to, since the early days when it was called netscape. I have been privacy conscience since day one on the web to the point of being paranoid.  | What the movie fails to address is that humans have been subject to misinformation and manipulation since the dawn of time, and it has never been black or white – misinformation and manipulation can be intentional or accidental. Result does not define intention. Whether it is FACEBOOK, our parents, newspapers, culture, religion – we as humans are always susceptible to the bias of our exposure. This is nothing new. The bigger question is are humans even capable of being unbiased, free from manipulation, and therefor even eligible voters in the paradigm for which we claim votes to be free and fair in democracy. The system is flawed because we are flawed, that is human nature - until we are robots, algorithms will not represent us accurately.
