@TrashTheory
So what modern bands do you believe embody the spirit of gothic rock?

"Real Goths don't wear back. They sack Rome." Favorite T-shirt phrase o date. PS. Manson himself made clear (and when you comprehend the modern style properly) isn't "Goth." In fact there are several such bands" that have been "labeled" goth because of lazy promoters despite the bands considering themselves more punk, emo, freak, metal, etc.

Don’t forget that early heavy metal like Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin brought in and conventionalized a dark mystique vibe in music. More innovative in many ways than people realize.
Not disregarding the early punk and goth subcultures either.

I have no idea why on earth would you state My Chemical Romance as being part of the gothic sub genre. They are 💯% an EMO band through and through, ask any purist who was a teenager during their time in the mid 2000s who was 14+. It's madness that you would have Marilyn Manson and My Chemical Romance in the same damn sentence, when they were fulling f'n beefing with each other at the height of MCR during the Black Parade album. MM's own words " “I’m embarrassed to be me because these people are doing a really sad, pitiful, shallow version of what I’ve done. If they want to identify with me then here’s a razor blade. Call me when you’re done and we’ll talk.". Either your ignorant AF of actual gothic music during that time or just some Gen-Z poser, I was actually in High School when MM's "Eat Me Drink Me" came out so I know wtf I am talking about!

It's a pity you forgot to mention Screaming Lord Sutch....He was a big pioneer of goth with his song Jack The Ripper which he did back in 1963 and dressed in white make-up, straggly hair and blacked out eyes. He is definitely a link between Screaming Jay Hawkins and Alice Cooper and deserves a mention. Frank Zappa should have also been included...There was some very dark music on their 1966 debut album 'Freak Out'... 'The return of the son of monster magnet' being one of them and 'Who needs the brain police'.

Goth is in the ear of the beholder. It was a very specific London subgenere. Vaguely stating that VU and early Roxy influenced stuff applies to everything. There were many bands that clearly embraced it. But it's not just "dark". No intelligent person would label JD as goth. Their wiry guitars and serious lyrics are not goth. Ditto Siouxsie and the Cure. Post-punk is not goth. Fail.

The fact that’s is boxed in and totally stereotyped (mis stereotyped ha) shows that no one really cares about real music. I know 50yo goths who don’t even call themselves goth or new wave or whatever. They just are. People like music for the wrong reasons nowadays. That’s why they copy sounds that. Came from people who had a soul. The digital age is the reason why there are no good “goth “ bands nowadays

Dave Vanian credits Screaming Lord Sutch. You can bring up Jay Hawkins now but no one really got to see American acts back then (albeit Sutch was probably imitating Hawkins). I'd add in too Throbbing Gristle and Genesis P-Orridge's other works.

Many interesting parallels, references, roots and relationships in music history are mentioned here. It's really fun and encourages you to rediscover influences through these cross-references. But I don't think that all these things can be clearly categorized. Most of the works mentioned here can be united by melancholy, but this is not a unique feature of 'Gothic'. Even if 'gothic' is associated with deep tones, death, transience and morbidity, for me some examples are 'simply' artistic works that express a longing, a theme, feelings or even the creation of a coherent and functioning sound and song (including performance). I wasn't a goth and I heard all that - but from an artistic point of view.
'I put a smell on you' (by Hawkins) - was a great atmospheric blues with humorous delivery. Hawkins staged himself even more and differently than his role models. Coffin & Voodoo actually became more of a humorous and ironic trademark. And even before that there were songs with depressive, melancholy content. Even popular ones.
For me, 'Cramps' were free-spirited, morbid fetish surf punkers.
I would also classify 'The Doors' more in the history of 'stoner rock'.
With 'Bela Lugosi is dead' by 'Bauhaus', it's worth mentioning that some artists at the end of the 70's moved and released in the dark and experimental genre: The The, Coil, Yello, Soft Cell, Depeche Mode, etc., and natrl. Tubeway Army - 'Are My Friends Electric'.
Bauhaus and Joy Division have also made music that is not 'gothic'. I'm still missing an assessment and classification of 'Dead Can Dance' here.
Anyway, a great contribution and thank you for it!!!

@jamesbarnes3832
Wow. Well, I know that Blue Oyster Cult was traditionally seen as a heavy metal band, but one cannot deny the amount of songs that would fall into what would be called Goth music. And this is true for most of their albums. How much influence did it have on bands that went the full Goth path... I don't know.
I do know that Blue Oyster Cult left the Lovecraftian side of Goth imprinted on Metalica for one.
Blue Öyster Cult (1972): Screams
Tyranny and Mutation (1973): O.D.'d on Life Itself; "Mistress of the Salmon Salt (Quicklime Girl)", and even "Wings Wetted Down" when taken out of context.
Secret Treaties (1974): Career of Evil, Subhuman, Harvester of Eyes, Flaming Telepaths, and Astronomy
Agents of Fortune (1976): (Don't Fear) The Reaper, The Revenge of Vera Gemini, and Tattoo Vampire
Spectres (1977): I Love the Night and Nosferatu
Cultösaurus Erectus (1980): Black Blade, Monsters, and Unknown Tongue
Fire of Unknown Origin (1981): After Dark, Joan Crawford, and Don't Turn your Back
The Revölution by Night (1983): Shadow of California and Feel the Thunder
Club Ninja (1985): Perfect Water
Imaginos (1988): pretty much the entire album except for Del Rio's song
Heaven Forbid (1998): Harvest Moon
Curse of the Hidden Mirror (2001): The Old Gods Return and Out of the Darkness
The Symbol Remains (2020): Tainted Blood, Nightmare Epiphany, and the Alchemist
And sure, I understand that many of these songs are heavier than most Goth music, but if you listen to the music, especially, on the order songs and Imaginos, you get those Gothy sounds mixed in during the song.
"Screams" for sure.
And the lyrics through out have a Gothy side to them even if it often leans more toward the Lovecraftian side.
And, sure, I know that the Goth movement tends to lean toward the vampire side of the supernatural influence (which Blue Oyster cult touches on a good bit as well), but it was more about the non-conformity - that is to say - breaking away from the mold of standardized acceptance like the punk movement.
If one tries to fit the pattern rather than to do their own thing within the genre then one is a conformist after all and, therefore, not a non-conformist at all.

Biggest mistake is defining something by description, someone decides Goth is to represent evil, someone else decides it represents the loneliness of the soul, who's going to make either of them think differently? What we decide we want something to be, that it will be because that's what it is... for us! Scream and rant in the rabbit hole as much as you want, one man's rabbit hole is another man's rabbit stew if you get my drift, don't care what anyone else says.

@SkullandSwors_art
I think more than goth music becoming different, the umbrella of what could be considered “goth rock” has expanded further, where it can incorporate more pop punk/emo music, or maybe more atmospheric folk, or lean more into hard rock and heavy metal(etc), but there are still some bands that maintain a classic goth feel, even down to the production, like Molchat Doma or Desmond Doom. Though my personal favorites in the modern scene tend to be on the heavier side like Tribulation or Unto Others.

1- Nothing Gothic nor talented about these clowns and their extremely UNlistenable music like there is nothing Christian in marxists, but quite the contrary really.
2- Their ''act'' all part of the same commie playbook to weaken America from within focusing on manipulating the young to submitting to the ever so foreign for anti American marxism
3- Just and justly remember what ex KGB Bezmenov revealed about their Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll mantra ofcommies who pivoted to China when the USSR imploded by the weight of its own oppression and mediocrity.
4-Listen to what Bezmenov said for good realizing them rock robolutionaries as crappers of where they eat, scripted and planted by a continuos kabal wanting the people to ''own nothing and be UNhappy'' when they, the elites pulling the strings behind it all get to own everythin, God forbid, after succeeding in social engineering American into their ''happy slaves'' or else...
5- Reality sucks and worse to let theses suckers keep on trying to fool you . It's time to wake up to the reality that they' ve been scientifically and methodically setting Americans up for failure big , the arSONists while acting and playing firefighters with this ''Gothic'' gimmicky shtick too, that is as phony as their love of freedom , of the democratic ways and of the noble ideals of America as enshrined in its Constitution and The Bills of Rights...both under attack for a long time from within.
